Simple Marinara Sauce

Marinara Sauce

Nothing beats a smooth and sumptuous tomato sauce. This marinara recipe is simply delicious & it’s mind bogglingly simple.

Marinara Sauce Profile

Marinara Sauce is one of the simplest yet most delicious of sauces. Nothing beats a rich and thick tomato sauce. It’s a sauce that goes with almost anything – on pasta, in bread, on pizza, anything goes. My favourite way to enjoy this delicious sauce is drizzled over some fresh pasta, sprinkled with a little fresh basil and extra virgin olive oil. It’s so simple yet so satisfying.

This sauce is my swiss army knife of culinary ingredients. I use it in lots of best recipes on the site. One of my favourite ways to eat this sauce is with my black bean vegan meatballs.

This is definitely one of those recipes that I have on my essentials list. It’s part of a select few recipes I have in my back pocket for when I’m struggling to find something tasty to cook. Marinara sauce will always deliver!

This meal is around 93% less polluting than the average UK meal.

Eating this recipe will save around 2.74 KG CO2e per person.

That’s equivalent to the emissions produced driving 22.66 KM in a modern car.

How do I calculate this?

Ingredients

  • 2 (400g) Cans Whole Plum Tomatoes
  • 2 Teaspoons Dried Oregano
  • 1 Teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 Teaspoon Sugar
  • 2 Cloves Garlic (peeled and finely chopped)
  • 2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • Handful Basil Leaves (roughly chopped)

Instructions

  • Tip the 2 cans of plum tomatoes into a large mixing bowl. Using your hands or a potato masher break down all the large pieces of tomato. After crushing the tomatoes you should have a chunky but smooth sauce.
  • Heat the 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large saucepan over a medium to low heat. Toss in the 2 cloves of chopped garlic and fry for around a minute. Don't let the garlic brown, remove from the heat if you suspect it is catching.
  • Pour the 2 teaspoons of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon paprika and 1 teaspoon of sugar into the pan. Cook for around 30 seconds, mixing thoroughly with a wooden spoon.
  • Tip your crushed tomatoes into the pan. Next add in the teaspoon of kosher salt and chopped basil to the tomato sauce, stir to combine all the ingredients. Bring the tomato sauce up to the boil, then turn down to a simmer, cover and cook for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes of cooking your sauce should be wonderfully thick and delicious. Taste and season with more kosher salt if needed.
